Description

No, this has nothing to do with a certain African explorer...

Rather, this piece was inspired by a very strange dream I had; in it, I was in a very large, old, atmospheric library. It was after dark, and I was searching for some documents. I came across some books/manuscripts dealing with these rocks, these special, living rocks that appeared on the earth from out of nowhere. They were some sort of transdimensional being and may have been a sort of gateway to another world; and all contained a special energy that drew people to them. I saw photographs of divers swarming around a particularly obelisk-like specimen that was anchored miles into the ocean. I was amazed that these beings had come here. Then I found out that scientists and government officials were going to begin drilling core samples of these rocks, and I became terrified that they were going to kill them because of it.

I then set out to stop it.

Weird.

I was really moved by that dream, even though I haven't been able to figure out the meaning behind it...

This painting somehow reminds me of a storybook illustration...

fufu. ^^
Granted the quality of this watercolour is a bit more sombre than the other too, but it's certainly nicely detailed. Ironically, the visual effects you used to simulate the grass bears a strong similarity to how we do it in vector art, with the exception that here, since you're assisted by the texture of the paper, you get a bushier pasture-like effect that makes it appear very realistic. ^^

That's a pretty cute premise, that of sentient rocks that don't do anything but just pop into our planet and receive lots of loving. ^^
Course even though i wouldn't trust governments to be careful either, you could probably also imagine that the core samples would be very very small (like taking blood). Most likely, though, they'd probably want to tear it apart a l "Alien Autopsy". ^^;

Funny, this reminds me a lot of one of my own weird dreams I had as a kid which was also very real, but a little bit darker. I was sailing on a boat, well aware this was in the distant future but not really much more self-aware beyond that. After some other weirdness I can no longer remember, the captain set aside a toy box for me and the other kids to play with. I only slowly and frightfully walked towards it, but all the other boys and girls ran, scratched, fought and tripped over each other just to get at its contents.

Inside was a whole litter of multi-colord dogs -- green, yellow, pink, blue, funky composite colors and so forth. Mind you this was long before I knew anything about genetic engineering or even that dogs can have their hair dyed -- in my dream I knew the dogs were born with these colors and that judging by their visible suffering it was not selected naturally to begin with. They couldn't even move much at all, their legs having the same floppy consistency as their ears like some living stuffed toy, so all they could do to avoid the onslaught of grubby hands was squirm about like worms.

Probably more horrifying is that despite all the heartbreaking crying and yelping and whining, the kids still took them out of the box and played, kicked, rolled, squeezed and toss them about just like any other toy -- they probably never grew up seeing a real dog in their lives, just these manufactured pets that were only animals in their tortured soul only.

I don't remember doing anything, except that I didn't play with them and that I was scared enough to jump off the ship. I remember the last part because the cold freezing water jolted me awake. -.-;

I'd rather hope it stays a dream and not a prophecy, but all I can tell you is that seeing dyed dogs still unnerve me very much to this day. -____-;
